Mayo players returned home from Dublin at the weekend after competing in the first of the Stiga Challenger Events of the new season 2011/2012.
There was success for Mayo in Divisions 1,2,and 5. of the event.
In Division 1 old rivals and club mates Eddie Ditchburn, Martin Williams, Daragh Egan, Brian Dunleavy,James Joyce, and Marie Williams. were matched together. Along side 6 players from Leinster.
After the group one stages of the event the 12 players were left to battle it out to see who would come out tops. In what was a tough division. In what was an exciting division and with some excellent table tennis being played we were down to the semi-finals, in the first semi- final Brian Dunleavy played extremly well but went down by a score of two games to one,
Meanwhile Martin Williams was playing his match against Luke Dempsey from Carlow and what a Match it was. The much improved player from Carlow had Martin on the back foot and with the score at 1-1 who was going to keep thier nerve. in a tight third game, With a crowd now gathered around the table Martin got off to an early lead, but then Luke came back with some good shots,but Martin dug deep and with his experience held his nerve and took the deciding game to win the match and be the division 1 champion.
Meanwhile in Division 2 young Kieth Hodgins from Sligo playing his first ever challenger was progressing well through the group stages of the event.
Playing some outstanding table tennis Keith made it through to the quarter finals of division 2. Keith played great table tennis in the quarter-final and held his nerve to progress to the semi-final.In what was new territory for Keith playing his first semi-final of a national event,he kept his cool and played some great table tennis shots to make it through to his first final.In the final Keith showed a cool head and played with vigour and tenacity. In what was a close match swaying one way then the other,Keith managed to hold out and winthe match and claim the division two title.Also in Division 2 newcomer Robbie Gill was playing in his first ever competition from Kilkelly table tennis club was alsoplaying well and qualified for the knockout stages of the division. Robbie was not overwhelmed by the occaision and progressed to the semi-final in grand style playing some good table tennis along the way. Robbie lost his semi-final but managed to calim third place in division 2, which was a good achievment for his first event,
In division three Conor Brogan from Knockmore Table Tennis Club was powering his way through the group stages and soon made it through to the knockout stages.
Conor played his quarter final with great passion and claimed victory to progress to the semi-final.With no rest he started his semi-final the way he finished the quarter final Conor came flying out of the blocks and quickly claimed victory by a score of two games to nil playing some fantastic tabletennis. and secured a place in the final, his third challenger final in a row..
Conor played against a Carlow player and quickly took the first game to lead one-nil. But his opponent was going to buckle and after a tough second match and with both players going for every ball his opponent managed to level the match 1-1.Down to the third and deciding game and with a crowd now gathered around the table it was a tough game. with both players pulling out the shots and battling hard for every point.
The spectators were now cheering every point and both players committed to going for the win it proved an exciting game to watch. but sadly for Conor he lost the third game 11-9 to finish runner-up in Division three
.
Meanwhile in Division 5 a young girl from Manulla table tennis club went on to win the division.
